Why we do what we do. And we are going to do it better.

March 5th, 2009 by Adib

Hello everyone, it’s been a really long while since we last posted something or in fact, anything on this blog. The last post was on December 1st 2008! But be assured that we did not forget you. Sometimes, life just overwhelms you with so much stuff but no worries, we are back for good now.

And so I’m back from my self-imposed break and I am pleased to announce that the FIVEFOOTWAY team are all set and ready to guide this ship (or pavement) to the future! I know that the world around us seems to be crumbling but we at FIVEFOOTWAY prefer to see it as a self-correction and evolution of the systems of the world. We firmly believe that at the end of the day, when the dust has settled, the world will be a much better place.

Speaking of self-correction and evolution, we at FIVEFOOTWAY have also been spending time taking a good look at ourselves and examine our shortcomings and strengths so that we may chart a direction to the future. My self-imposed break have allowed me to freshen up my view of things and together with the other good people at FIVEFOOTWAY, we are determined to inject a fresh dose of enthusiasm and direction to the cause.

The core team of Jia-Jun (JJ), Lyn and myself have had some discussions on the future direction of the website and we have identified some key components that will be our main focus in the coming month. Without giving too much away, expect to see the FIVEFOOTWAY evolving into something better with a tighter editorial focus, a plan for long-term sustainability and a refreshed team among other things. And all will be unveiled in healthy doses via this blog of ours.

One of the key discussions that we had was re-examining FIVEFOOTWAY, right from its first principles and one of it is: the very reason that we exist and here, we share it with you.

We at FIVEFOOTWAY believe that information and knowledge will empower us to shape a better built environment. However, we feel that the media of today is not equipped to meet the demands of a new generation of architects- global and yet firmly rooted in the local and regional context, highly knowledgeable with easy access to hundreds of design blogs and printed magazines, and a desire for original, high quality content delivered in a concise and engaging format.

It is because of this that we exist and by using various mediums, FIVEFOOTWAY creates, collects and distributes information about architecture; feeding the minds of a new emerging generation of architects.

We’ve been told that we’re doing a pretty decent job so far but I think, we can definitely do a lot better. Today, we renew our commitment to you, our readers, and you can be sure that we will be stepping it up a notch. We are excited to tell you about it but we also want to hear from you.

To those who have not taken our survey yet, it isn’t too late. Visit www.fivefootway.com/survey and help us to know you a little bit better. Also, if you have any thoughts or comments for us, do drop us an email at office[at]fivefootway.com.

More soon!
